Trump threatens to ‘annihilate’ Iran in UN speech as officials meet on sidelines

September 23, 2026 • 2 min read

President Donald Trump delivered a stark warning to the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, telling world leaders that he faces a pivotal choice regarding the future of Iran. In a speech marked by aggressive rhetoric, Trump suggested he could either pursue a peace deal or completely annihilate the Islamic Republic if conflicts remain unresolved. This ultimatum comes as the U.S. continues to justify ongoing military actions against Tehran, which Trump argues have prevented Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and served as a demonstration of his philosophy of peace through strength.

Despite the fiery language used from the podium, where only a single member of the Iranian delegation remained to listen, high level diplomacy continued behind closed doors. On the sidelines of the assembly, U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff engaged in a productive three hour meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi via mediators. While Tehran offered no official comment, Witkoff expressed optimism on social media, describing the discussions as constructive and promising, suggesting that Trump’s strategy remains one of coercive diplomacy—threatening overwhelming force while keeping negotiation channels open.

The president’s address extended beyond Iran, touching on several global flashpoints and domestic priorities in a tone that seemed tailored for voters ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. He vowed to bring an end to the war between Russia and Ukraine more quickly than critics expect and insisted that the United States would maintain its dominance in what he rebranded as super intelligence over artificial intelligence. Rejecting any notion of global governance or international oversight, Trump criticized the UN as being run by unelected bureaucrats and emphasized absolute national sovereignty backed by unmatched military power.

Beyond his speeches, Trump utilized his time in New York to solidify strategic alliances and territorial access. He signed an agreement with Denmark to increase the U.S. military presence on Greenland, granting expanded access to its airspace and territory while reaffirming Danish sovereignty over the island. Throughout the day, he also held face to face meetings with various world leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, alongside representatives from several Gulf nations to discuss stabilizing a volatile Middle East.
