Freshman Struggles and Overtime Heartbreak Sink Michigan Against Indiana

October 25, 2026 • 2 min read

Michigan had every opportunity to pull off a stunning upset on Saturday, but they ultimately fell short in a gritty defensive struggle, losing 13-6 to Indiana in overtime. The game was defined by a clash of wills where neither offense could find its rhythm for most of the afternoon. After a scoreless first quarter ended with an Indiana field goal following a fumble, the contest devolved into a low scoring affair that felt more like a survival test than a traditional football game.

Freshman quarterback Tommy Carr faced a baptism by fire in his first career start. While he showed flashes of brilliance, including several key completions to JJ Buchanan and Hogan Hansen, he struggled with consistency throughout the day. Carr battled through an interception and a fumble, while the Michigan rushing attack remained largely dormant, leaving the burden of the offense squarely on the young signal caller’s shoulders. Despite these struggles, the Wolverines stayed alive thanks to a spectacular defensive effort highlighted by Zeke Berry, whose 37 yard interception return set up Michigan’s first score of the game.

The tension peaked in the final minutes of regulation when Carr led a desperate thirteen play drive deep into Hoosier territory. Though he was sacked on third down at the three yard line, Trey Butkowski managed to nail a twenty six yard field goal as time expired to force overtime tied at 6-6. It seemed as though Michigan had shifted the momentum entirely, but that hope vanished quickly once the extra period began.

Despite winning the coin toss, Michigan chose to let Indiana take the ball first. The Hoosiers wasted little time capitalizing on that decision, scoring their first touchdown of the match on a four yard run by Josh Hoover to take a 13-6 lead. When it was Michigan’s turn to respond, Carr managed one clutch conversion on fourth down to keep the drive moving, but he eventually ran out of options. The Hoosiers held firm on the final stand, securing the victory and leaving Michigan to wonder what might have been if those few missing pieces of offensive execution had fallen into place.
